Several questions

[:1]Greetings,

New to the boards and relatively new to D2. Though I've had the game and played it on and off since launch, however I've really begun to sink my teeth into it now. That being said I have a few questions, some general, some class/build specific. I apologize in advance for the length of this post and all the questions. I also play a WW Barb that is 62 at the time of this posting if that impacts certain answers.

Edit: Any gameplay related questions are asked with PvE/PvM in mind.

I've seen resist on items listed in percent and just as a number. Example: Resist Poison +15 and Resist Poison +15%.

-Which is better exactly, what's the difference and (if it works like I think it does) do percent resists help more as you make up deficits in NM and Hell?

-Is there recommend level ranges for when to advance to the next difficulty vs when to farm? Because the game is older I've seen various answers to this and I'm not sure what's even current. I'm currently 62 and in Act V of Nightmare (on Bnet), and I think I'm about right where I should be.

-I've found that the bosses for quests have been almost trivial in difficulty in NM thus far (diablo was a joke). But the random boss mobs out in the world can be nasty. Is that normal?

The character I'm playing is a WW Barb, and I've essentially been following the Diablo wiki and one or two other solid guides. But I'm still wondering about a few things.

-DW or 2h for weapon choice? The wiki says utilize a 2h to maximize the build...but it says use a Zerker axe, which I gathered was a 1h weapon.

-If you do DW do you shoot for (idealy) 2 Breath of the Dying RW? Or do you use two different RWs that compliment eachother?

-If you follow the build in the wiki, you finish the essentials around 81. It recommends putting extra points in Iron Skin or Natural Resistance. Would it be wise to say..not level up shout as far right away and up Natural Resistance instead in order to shed resist gear?

-I recently read that 1.13 made the Oblivion Knights (I think they're called) no longer cast Iron Maiden. If this is accurate, is the point invested in Berserk still worth while?

-Lastly, I read that for unique items to drop, their non unique counterparts must be able to drop in that area/difficulty. Is this accurate? If so, is it possible to farm for Barb essentials like Arreat's Face in NM?

Thanks in advance for those who sifted through all that to answer questions.|||Quote:

holy crap, that's a lot...

some items give + resists meaning that they increase the resist limit of 75 up to max of 95%. Some just give resists like for instance you already have 30 base resists and an item gives 50% resists, which gives you max of 75% res.

around lvl 48 is good to go to nm, and 75 is good for hell.

some hell mobs with extra fast and strong with lightnign enchant are dangerous.

for any melee char including your barb, grief runeword and shield or grief and 2nd weapon are good.

only put 1 point into iron skin and nat resist because returns after 1 pt are really low, just use +skills items. shout pve is 1 pt, pvp shout either 1 or max.

berserk is for phys immunes.

not sure of the math involved, but arreats can drop in nm (90% sure)|||Nightmare Diablo has a 1:734 chance of dropping Arreat's Face.

you went right to the point -_- grrrr lol|||LOL! "Brevity is the soul of wit."|||About iron maiden - Thats gone.

About natural resistance- I have lvl 3-4 in that with my barb. Gives ~47@ with +skills.

I have found out that grief+botd works the best for a ww barb. Grief in mainhand. Slot above the gloves. Either use phaseblades or berserker axes.

About berserk- get 1 point only. It will trash physical immunes.

Peace|||i should have taken a shortcut like everyone else >.>|||I've seen resist on items listed in percent and just as a number. Example: Resist Poison +15 and Resist Poison +15%.

-> To my knowledge, allres bonuses aren't shown with a percent sign, unlike bonuses to single resists, but that's just a typo, it's both the same type of bonus.

-Which is better exactly, what's the difference and (if it works like I think it does) do percent resists help more as you make up deficits in NM and Hell?

-> In nightmare, you simply receive a -30% penalty to resists and in hell it's -100% (to be adjusted by the quest rewards for rescuing Anya), but the bonuses from skills and equipment themselves aren't affected.

-Is there recommend level ranges for when to advance to the next difficulty vs when to farm? Because the game is older I've seen various answers to this and I'm not sure what's even current. I'm currently 62 and in Act V of Nightmare (on Bnet), and I think I'm about right where I should be.

-> That depends a lot on your build and your equipment. If you can kill the monsters without too many problems, all is fine with respect to what your character is capable of. However, if you don't gain further levels while doing that, you should improve your equipment or do something about your build.

-I've found that the bosses for quests have been almost trivial in difficulty in NM thus far (diablo was a joke). But the random boss mobs out in the world can be nasty. Is that normal?

-> Again, that depends on your build and your equipment. Act bosses might die quickly in melee if you have a decent chance to deal crushing blows, in particular when using an attack which always hits. A paladin with the Black runeword in a flail and a few potions can kill every act boss or UT boss in 30 seconds, by using his 1 point investment in smite (which is a prereq for holy shield and a L1 skill).

-> I would use a two-hander, as two weapons are more expensive than one and a character with that much life doesn't need blocking in PvM. If it's BotD, either a colossus blade or a great poleaxe (which is polearm class BTW, not an axe). IIRC, no 6 socket two-handed axe or mace is fast enough to reach the final WW speed breakpoint with BotD and even though there's a spear which is as good as a GPA, it has higher dex reqs which is a bit pointless if no shield is worn.

In PvP, a shield is mandatory, for blocking and as a carrier of further bonuses. In that case, use a BA.

-If you do DW do you shoot for (idealy) 2 Breath of the Dying RW? Or do you use two different RWs that compliment eachother?

When dual-wielding, I suggest to use two different weapons, like a BotD or Grief BA and a Beast BA. the problem is that both weapons have to be quick enough, else they will slow down WW speed. Therefore I don't dual-wield when using WW, it's better to be used when using frenzy which only needs a quick weapon in the main hand while IAS is irrelevant in the off hand where only the base speed matters.

However, my WW barbs are typically wearing the full IK set while the others are usually frenzy barbs, so I'm not really an expert about that topic.

-If you follow the build in the wiki, you finish the essentials around 81. It recommends putting extra points in Iron Skin or Natural Resistance. Would it be wise to say..not level up shout as far right away and up Natural Resistance instead in order to shed resist gear?

One point in natural resists is enough. You will also get a few skill bonuses and the additional bonuses get less with further investments, so it's not worth it. Iron skin scales up in a linear fashion, by 10% per skill level. After having maxed WW, a weapon mastery and BO and having made the usual 1 point investments, I put remaining points into iron skin.

-I recently read that 1.13 made the Oblivion Knights (I think they're called) no longer cast Iron Maiden. If this is accurate, is the point invested in Berserk still worth while?

Definitely! There are lots of physical immune monsters as well.

-Lastly, I read that for unique items to drop, their non unique counterparts must be able to drop in that area/difficulty. Is this accurate?

-> It's one of the prerequirements, but the area/monster level must also be at least match the quality level of the unique. For example, Pindleskin can drop any base item and his monster level is 86. That means he cannot drop an Arachnid Mesh (qlvl 87), even though the base item itself (spiderweb sash) is one of the lowliest elite items.

If so, is it possible to farm for Barb essentials like Arreat's Face in NM?

-> Mostly yes. You just won't be able to find things like the full IK set or a decent melee weapon for hell mode.|||Wow, thanks to everyone who took the time to read that and respond. This info is really helpful.

Glad I followed the advice on here already (not having berserk would have hurt several times today).|||ur welcom, do i get cookies?

daaang krischan, way to beat me by a mile lol
