Unfortunately, the suggestion is always written in some shorthand abbreviation. Could someone tell me what mercenary is good for both a summoning necromancer, and a bow-using amazon? Please tell me in which act the mercenary may be found, and how to differentiate him from others available for hire.|||Might merc is the only choice for a summonmancer. Act 2, nightmare difficulty, "offensive."
Might is also good for a physical bowazon. Holy freeze can be good for a bowazon too, that's Act 2, Nightmare, "defensive."

I scanned that guide that you pointed out, and from reading it, I am guessing that your recommendation is based on the fact that the mercenary's aura will benefit my summoned minions?
If I hire him out of Hell difficulty, will his final stats just not be quite as good, or is he just flatly not available in any difficulty other than nightmare? I ask because my necromancer is level 78, so if I hire one out of nightmare I'll have to play quite a bit in lower zones to level him up.|||i believe nm and hell mercs have different auras|||I just discovered that this is a non-issue. Given the choice between Normal and Hell difficulty mercenaries, I'd always choose Normal for the slightly higher stats. Nightmare is an entirely different aura so no comparison with the other two can be easily made.

Ladder reset?
[:1]Heard people talk about an upcoming ladder reset in the trade forum, and I just wanna ask: do anyone know the source of this info?
I checked arreat summit, but I found nothing.
Also, what does iirc mean in trades?

There was a major voting about how long the ladder's should be. And the result came to be 6 months. So every 6 months, the ladder resets. And all ladder stuff become non-ladder.
Last reset was 28 Mars 2011. So the next reset should be 28 September 2011. (might have been 24mars-24sept...)

Then other people realized that the result led to a decision about the length of the ladder season and became upset. A second poll was started and this time a different mix of people participated. I for myself believe that the mix of the first poll was a better representation of the battlenet community than those of the second one.

[:1]Just started playing Diablo 2 last week. I had never heard of the game until I saw a plug for Diablo 3. After getting it to work on my Win 7 machine, I have been having non-stop fun. I am currently in Act 2 and just about to finish it playing as a barbarian. Level 20 I think. I do have a couple of questions, so please be kind with the answers.
1. How do you configure your mouse to get the most out of it while in battle? I get the right click, left click, but what about the scroll bar or side bar? I dislike having to touch the keyboard, but I don't see any other way to play this game.
2. Best time to save? I noticed that if I save and exit, the monsters reset themselves. So does this mean the best time to save is at a way-point or after I have completed a quest, or both?
3. Should I be doing "magic finding" at my level? I can't find a decent sword and I only seem to get items for mages when I do kill a boss or mini boss. Nothing pisses me off more than getting a wand with 10,000 gold that I can't use. :)
4. Should I keep these unique or rare items? I only play single player, but am hoping to run through again using a few more players, like necro or paladin. Can I use the items that I find with my barbarian for my necro?
Yeah, I am totally addicted to this game and am having so much fun. I can't believe that I could have been playing this game 10 years ago. Wow, did I miss out or what? BTW, I only play a couple of hours a night a few days a week, so it may take me months to get through this game with a Barbarian. Thanks in advance for your answers and your patience.|||1. 4. Yes. You should go to the Single Player Forum and download either ATMA or GoMule. Each allows you to keep nearly infinite stashes, as well as transfer items between characters. There is also a Multiplayer subforum, for those who wish to multiplay with their Single Player characters. I prefer Single Player play myself.
Edit: One of the biggest advantages of Single Player is that you can manipulate the difficult of the game. For example, you can hit Enter and type '/playersx', without the quotations, and where x is a number from one to eight. This will simulate having additional players in the game, which makes monsters tougher, but also increases the experience you get from them and the number of items they drop.
If you haven't updated the version you're playing to 1.13, you may want to connect to battle.net to update. Transhaw's version switcher is also available for download at the Single Player Forum, which allows you to switch between patch releases.

To the MF question: I wouldn't do that so early. A lot of people (not myself) run baal in act 5 before entering nightmare difficulty to gain extra lvls - this can of course also upgrade your items a bit. If you are looking for better gear I can suggest the runeword "Steel" just as Noodle. Also, when I go untwinked (only using the items you find") I always hire an act 2 mercenary and equip him with a cubed savage polearm (cube this by putting any staff+any diamond+a kris+a light belt in the horadric cube)
There is also a Single Player Trading Forum where vou can trade for better gear. Be sure to thorougly read the rules first, though.
Often some of the members hosts giveaways as well, which I myself found very useful when I started out.|||Thanks so much. That is exactly what I was looking for.
I will head to the SPF after I have read this this newbie forum. I need to research what "runewords" are and cubing recipes.
Those mods seem to be exactly what I need as far as storage goes. I have no idea what to keep as far as chipped gems, skulls etc., so I just sold them. And any item I can't use with my barb gets sold also. At least I am only starting act 3, so I probably haven't sold too many good things.
I did upgrade to 1.13.

So I just started playing D2 randomly (Torchlight wasn't cutting it and D3 isn't out yet) and I find I'm a pack rat. So any purpose to all these characters I have full of rares? I just keep stashing them away lol. Figured I'd do more killing if I stopped muling so much random stuff if there is no point to it all (and that will help a lot if I'm still playing after Sept 24 on the new ladder season)
I have no idea what any of them are, I see rare, doesn't help my sorc, mule it without another look... lol... *sigh* I a terrible packrat disease don't I? Prob caught it from smashing and digging around in all those rats' nests...

Starting again after 2 years
[:1]Hi guys, I am starting to play D2 again for the first time in 2 years to gear up for D3. Since I have to start new again on the ladder, I am starting with a sorceress (magic finder) with a meteorb build. Does this sound like the way to go to get started again? Asking About Perming Runes - Fair Warning - Updated 2/17/2009
[:1]The word Perming refers to any one of several supposed method of making duped items permanent, and non poofable.
We do not allow, support nor condone the use of dupes, hacks, cheats, etc and perming falls under this topic as it supports duping.
Any threads asking about how to perm runes, or any other duped item will be deleted on sight, no questions asked, no PM's or questions answered either. Duping is cheating and that is not supported here, so let me paraphrase part of what Shaperla said:
